Free solo onsight flash?
Come on, it’s just a bunch of giant basalt cracks! Walk in the park.

All morning. We made the kids watch it before we left.

Looks like their cloaking devices have improved since 1977.

When I visited there with my family in the late 90's, we camped nearby, and I swear there was a van there with lots of antennas, questionable use of aluminum foil, etc. - I swear I’m not making that up, but because it was the late 90's, even if I took a picture, it’s for sure buried in a box in my parents’ house. Or else the van was abducted. Whatever.

I need to go back there. My dad and a friend of his have climbed it. There is a box up top with a notebook in it to sign your name.

if you can I recommend staying into the night to star gaze. the night sky there has some of the lowest light pollution in the nation. https://www.nps.gov/deto/planyourvisit/night-sky-viewing.htm

This whole trip started with a desire to see an unpolluted night sky. We have some sky gazing planned. Last. Lille of nights have been cloudy.

I talked to a ranger who said that backbon the 80s a guy free soloed DT in 18 minutes. That’s nuts.

I don’t do heights. I’d crap my pants. I did enjoy the story about the guy who parachuted into the top in 1941 and had to wait 5 days for some climbers to come up and rescue him.

We drove by there in 2004 and camped somewhere in northeast Wyoming. Can confirm.

We had our boys watch Close Encounters before we left. They needed the cultural reference. For my money, it holds up extremely well, and was every bit as enjoyable now as it was when it came out. The scenes of Neary’s family falling apart, however, were much more poignant to me as an adult than they were when I was 10.
And I never did find the spaceport. They must have torn it down.

There was also a guy who parachuted down onto it, without first having a solid plan how to get down after:
